The Gibsonville Fire Department is seeking two (2) part-time firefighters. The selected applicants will typically work 1 to 2 days a week M-F 8am-5pm. There will be occasional weekend shifts available, 12 and 24 hour shifts. Candidates must be 19 years of age or older. Candidates must also be a high school graduate or have a GED, and a valid NC Class B drivers license, Emergency Vehicle Driver (EVD) certificate, Firefighter I and II, and EMT certifications. Hourly pay starts at $14.39 with the hourly rate increasing to $18.37 in January 2023. Part-time firefighters are eligible for a part-time fire engineer position after 6-months of satisfactory employment and meeting all other requirements for the position. General Statement of Duties

Performs entry level firefighting work in combating fires, performing rescues, performing emergency medical care, and operating and maintaining fire vehicles and related equipment.

Distinguishing Features of the Class

An employee in this class is responsible for general firefighting, rescue, emergency medical work, and driving vehicles to the fire scene or emergency medical work. Work also includes preparing the fire vehicle, lines, and equipment for use by other firefighters. Work is often performed under stressful emergency conditions and frequently involves personal hazards. Work standards and procedures are generally established and understood; however considerable independence and judgment is required during fire calls and emergency calls. Work is performed under the regular supervision of the Fire Captain through observation and reports.

Duties and Responsibilities

Essential Duties and Tasks

Receives and responds to fires and emergency calls

Provides responses to emergency calls and administers life support techniques and procedures.

Participates in hazardous material response and prevention programs.

Responds to alarms and assists in the suppression of fire including rescue, entry, and ventilation and salvage work.

May after appropriate training drive fire engine to fire scene; connects hoses to hydrants and uses hoses to apply water or chemicals to fire; forces entry into burning structures and searches for and rescues occupants.

Connects pump to water sources and hoses to pump; maintains the correct pressure for nozzles and ensures that all equipment is available for use by fire personnel.

Provides pre-incident planning to area businesses and buildings.

Inspects, maintains, and makes minor repairs to the apparatus and loads to ensure the presence, cleanliness, and serviceability of necessary firefighting and emergency equipment, tools and supplies.

Performs testing and routine maintenance on vehicles; tests fire hydrants

Maintains, performs minor repairs and cleans assigned fire station quarters and grounds.

Presents programs and classes in schools.

Work requires the ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with other employees and the public.

Physical Requirements

Must be able to physically perform the basic life operational support functions of climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, reaching, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, fingering, grasping, feeling, talking and hearing, and repetitive motions.

Must be able to perform heavy work exerting up to 100 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects.

Must possess the visual acuity to operate trucks and other equipment.

The worker is subject to both inside and outside environmental conditions, extreme cold and heat, noise, vibration, and hazards such as proximity to moving mechanical parts, electrical current, or exposure to chemicals.

The worker is subject to atmospheric conditions such as fumes, odors, dusts, mists, gases, or poor ventilation.

The worker may come in contact with potentially infectious bodily fluids during the performance of duties.

Desirable Education and Experience

Graduation from high school and specialized training in fire science, and some experience in firefighting; or an equivalent combination of education, experience and training.

Special Requirements

Possession of a valid class B North Carolina driver license.

Possession of NC Firefighter I and II

Possession of Emergency Vehicle Driver Certification

Possession of NC Emergency Medical Technician Basic Certification
