Job Description:

Amherst College invites applications for the Preparator position. The Preparator is a full-time, non-exempt position, starting at a rate of $27.38 - $29.00 /hour. Given Amherst's distinction as one of the most diverse liberal arts colleges in the country, the successful candidate will demonstrate the w ays in which they bring value to and will work towards supporting a broadly diverse community.

The Preparator prepares and maintains the artwork in the Mead Art Museum's collections for the diverse Amherst College community and campus partners through support of exhibitions at the Mead and spaces under its auspices, display of artwork in study rooms, storage conditions, and loans. The Preparator schedules and maintains the museum's installation calendar based on the exhibition calendar and the timing needed to prep and install specific exhibitions and assists the curatorial team in maintaining a production schedule. Provides continuing care of the collection and preparation of it for exhibition, including matting, hinging, framing, mount-making and storage preservation housing techniques. Supports a diverse and wide range of visiting artists working in different media (including digital image and audio technology/ multi-media) and the curatorial team to realize installation goals. In support of installation goals, the Preparator may create digital or physical mockups for curators and/or work with the exhibition team, including curators, museum educators, and exhibition and graphic designers.

Communicate effectively in a culturally and ethnically diverse campus community. Will maintain accepted museum standards and practices and OSHA and ADA requirements, assist with collections inventories, and occasionally act as courier for high value loans and represents the college to peer institutions.

The Preparator contributes to the Mead's mission to serve as an interdisciplinary laboratory for innovative teaching and learning with original works of art through their work installing exhibitions and also by seeking ways to introduce a diverse set of college students to their work (ie, demos, public programs, internships, workshops, etc). As the Mead hopes to increase student knowledge of all museum positions, the Preparator will on occasion offer demos or participate in educational programs.

Summary of Duties and Responsibilities
  • Prepare artwork for exhibitions, class use in the study rooms in coordination with the Study Room Manager, and storage. Manages and installs exhibitions at the Mead and at special locations on campus (Russian Center, President's House, and President and Provost's Offices) in coordination with curators and the director. Includes safe handling, packing, unpacking and transportation of art objects in the permanent collection, and coordination with the registrar, curators and director for loan objects and traveling exhibitions. Includes coordinating custom framing solutions for unique objects with professional framers.
  • Coordinate exhibition installation and design, including the supervision of up to two part-time museum technicians for two months to install major fall and spring exhibitions; make equipment recommendations and make purchases based on budget specifications. Assists with budget planning for specific projects by providing accurate cost projections for contract services and materials.
  • Handling, packing, unpacking, transporting, and moving art internally for classroom sessions and exhibitions and externally on campus (Russian Center Gallery, President's home and office) and for loan exhibitions. Maintain art for storage (pulling, matting and framing).
  • Prepare and maintain the galleries, including wall repairs, occasional painting, and lighting; coordinate and collaborate with facilities for construction of temporary walls and large-scale painting.
  • Coordinate installation of gallery signage in conjunction with the designers, curators, educators, and contractual vendors. Prepares and installs gallery object labels, as well as implement and maintain appropriate lighting for objects and exhibition experience.
  • Maintain exhibitions, storage spaces, equipment, tools, work-spaces, and supply inventory.

  • Bachelor's or Bachelor of Fine Art's degree or relevant technical expertise and experience with art, architecture, art history, design, exhibitions, fabrication, or material culture
    Specialized training, including:
  • Knowledge of safe art-handling practices
  • Knowledge of matting, hinging, framing works on paper; experience with mount making
  • Knowledge of exhibition design and experience performing installation tasks, including lighting
  • Valid driver's license to drive college vehicles when necessary. Requires successful completion of Five College Risk Management driver credentialing program.

  • 5 years related experience
  • Refined attention to detail, organizational skills, technical problem-solving and knowledge of art storage and display methods, techniques, and procedures
  • Ability to multi-task and function with accuracy to meet scheduled opening and program dates while being flexible in response to changes in schedules and designs.
  • Commitment to effectively working within and contributing to a diverse and inclusive environment.
  • Project Management

  • Experience fabricating scale models and using digital architectural-modeling software
  • Proficiency in the operation of woodworking and hand tools, painting equipment, air-lifts, light meters, multimedia/digital image and audio technology.
  • Proficiency in basic computing, including Microsoft Office software and MIMSY, preferred.
  • Experience using Sketchup or other digital design tools
  • Experience offering educational demos
