The Dave Thomas Foundation for Adoption is a national nonprofit public charity dedicated exclusively to finding permanent homes for the more than 150,000 children waiting in North America's foster care systems. Created by Wendy's founder Dave Thomas who was adopted, the Foundation implements evidence-based, results-driven national service programs, foster care adoption awareness campaigns and innovative grantmaking. The Foundation has an opening for a full-time Manager of Strategic Communications.

STATEMENT OF PURPOSE

Under the direction of the Vice President of Marketing and Communications and the Director of Strategic Communications, the Manager of Strategic Communications will be a strong writer who supports the creation of messaging and materials that inform and support staff and other key audiences in advancing the Foundation's mission.

ACCOUNTABILITIES

  1. Help the Foundation's program, business development and legal departments in promoting participation in meetings, trainings and events; support the development of presentations as well as print and digital materials and resources that educate and engage audiences, including Wendy's Wonderful Kids adoption agency grantees, judges, agency attorneys and other legal partners, advocacy/government relations and current and prospective state/provincial expansion partners.
  2. Support the implementation of compelling communications campaigns, messages, calls to action and materials that educate and advocate for the importance of permanency for youth.
  3. Support other departments' internal and external communications, as requested.
  4. Write, edit and proofread communications materials in alignment with the Foundation's brand standards and AP style.
  5. Assume responsibility for professional growth and development, keeping current with child welfare policies, communications industry trends and communications techniques.
  6. Perform other duties, as assigned.


QUALIFICATIONS

The following qualifications are representative of the knowledge, skills and/or abilities required to serve in this role. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions:

  • Success developing content for print, digital, social, web, videos and events to advance an organization's mission, cause and/or programmatic goals.
  • Proficient in developing and editing compelling PowerPoint presentations for in-person events and webinars, in partnership with content specialists and designers.
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced, collaborative environment and manage multiple projects, on time and budget. Proficient use of project management programs that aid internal communications (e.g., Asana).

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

  • Undergraduate degree in communications, marketing, journalism or a related field.
  • 5+ years of experience executing internal and external communications strategies.
  • Experience in a nonprofit or communications consulting setting is preferred.

WORK ENVIRONMENT

  • Limited travel required (less than 5%).
  • Flexible work arrangements with up to two days per week from home.
